A PROVEN LEADER

In the last four years, Sheriff Marlin Gusman has guided the Orleans Parish Prison through unprecedented growth, all while maintaining a record of safety and efficiency.

In 2009, the OPP took in more than 66,000 prisoners, which is remarkable considering New Orleans’ population is just around 320,000. Every day, Sheriff Gusman manages a daily population that has increased in four years from 1,500 to 3,500 prisoners, representing everything from car thieves to violent offenders.

Sheriff Gusman has handled the growing need for prison space by working hard and dedicating himself completely to his job.
 
COMMITTED TO A BETTER FUTURE
As Criminal Sheriff Marlin Gusman has worked tirelessly to improve the Orleans Parish Prison. His record of building and advancing the functions of the Sheriff’s Office are unprecedented.

In February, 2009, the OPP completed a nearly $20 million overhaul of its facilities, making them larger, more modern and more secure. Sheriff Gusman also oversaw the completion of a $4.5 million temporary Intake & Processing Center (IPC) in June, 2008, that facilitates the efficient booking and handling of up to 250 individuals daily.

Sheriff Gusman has laid out a vision for the future of the Orleans Parish Prison, with plans in the works for a new permanent Intake and Processing Center, a new Administrative Center, a 1,200 bed housing unit, a new Work Release Center and even a new temporary housing facility, which will reduce crowding and aide in the secure management of the growing prison population.
 
DEVOTED TO THE COMMUNITY
Sheriff Gusman also has an unwavering a commitment to the wellbeing of his community. He regularly donates his time to community projects across the city.
